BROOKS ANDERSON paints luminescent landscapes and seascapes that capture the dramatic beauty of the California coast and the Eastern Seaboard. Through composition, detail and clarity of light, he evokes in paint the experience of atmosphere and natural phenomena. Brooks enjoys responding to what is happening on the surface of the work—as he builds up its layers of vibrant, transparent color—while simultaneously harnessing an energy to the composition. Brooks earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from California State University in Northridge, where he studied with such established artists of the Los Angeles art scene as Saul Bernstein, Watson Cross, Walter Gabrielson, Marvin Hardin, Joyce Treiman, Hans Burkhardt and Ernest Velardi. He also studied in Maine with William Holst, a student of Hans Hofmann. His work is in numerous public collections, including the Philbrook Museum in Tulsa, and can be found in the seminal book Spirit of Place: Contemporary American Realism in the Landscape Tradition by John Arthur.
