The American Arts Quarterly describes the work of DOUGLAS WIRLS as having an “almost telescopic sensibility upon small details of vegetation, blades of grass and weeds” with a “reverent intensity and intimacy" that recalls "Albrecht Dürer’s wonderful drawing of a tuft of grass.”

 

Wirls was educated at Tyler College of Art and the Skowhegan School.  He is a professor of drawing and painting at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY and the recipient of two awards from the National Academy of Design, the Laufman Award for Drawing and the Joseph S. Isador Medal for Painting. His work is held in many private and public collections, including the Butler Institute of American Art, the Pennsylvania State Museum, the New Jersey State Museum, and the Woodmere Art Museum in Woodmere PA.
