A Beach

oil/canvas, 42.5 x 54.5 cm, probably late 1870s or 1880s

Jacob Maris

"Maris conveys a powerful sense of isolation in this image of a lone fisherman on a wind-swept beach. The only other signs of human presence are two empty boats pulled out of the water onto the sand. The top two-thirds of the canvas are given over to scudding clouds."
